RL.Supply was a Rocket League focussed GPT earn site, where users could earn free Rocket League items by participating in surveys, watching videos and playing games.

RL.Supply

RL.Supply was a Rocket League focussed "get paid to" (GPT) earn site, where users could earn free Rocket League items by participating in surveys, watching videos and playing games. With over 100,000 registered users, and millions of monthly requests, RL.Supply was one of my largest projects at the time.

RL.Supply was a company founded in 2019 where I acted as the lead developer, working in a team small team of 5. The project was a unique and useful experience in working with larger-scale production environments due to the challenges that come with a global active user base.

Aggregating Offers

RL.Supply did not directly seek advertisers looking to promote their products, instead we used third parties known as offer walls. These offer walls accepted payment from advertisers and provided an API to GPT sites (like RL.Supply) to enable them to bring traffic to the advertisers. As such, it was common for GPT sites to collate multiple offer walls on a single site, providing their users with more options and increasing the chances that users would find relatively well-paying offers to engage with. Over time, RL.Supply expanded its selection of offer walls to include Adgem, AdGate Media, Persona.ly and many more.

Now with a pool of thousands of active offers, the problem becomes finding the diamonds in the rough. Many offers pay little for a substantial time investment, have rather delayed payouts or simply aren't enjoyable to complete. As such, it is in everyone's interest to find the lucrative offers and recommend them to users. RL.Supply addresses this problem in a number of ways:

  1. Live Chat: the website featured a live chat where users could discuss their tactics for finding strong offers, share which ones work and their experience. This established a community of users that would improve each other's experience on the site through collaboration.
  2. Featured Offers: given RL.Supply saw and paid out every offer that was successfully completed and credited, we were in a good place to collate this data and recommend users offers that others had already completed. This feed was customised per user, to align with similar offers they have engaged with in the past, and exclude those they had already completed.
  3. Live Completion Feed: finally, a feed displayed across the top of the site provided a real-time feed of every offer completed on the site. These notifications were actionable, taking the user straight to the offer that was just completed. They also served as a social proof that the website indeed works.

The home page of RL.Supply was the Earn page. Users were presented featured offers, could access the offer walls themselves and complete the first-party bonus offers.

Redeeming Rewards

Upon successfully completing offers, users would redeem their coins for Rocket league items and gift cards via the store. These rewards were valued anywhere from a few cents to hundreds of dollars, allowing users to choose to save up or quickly reward themselves along the way. The store boasted instant automated delivery around the clock for all rewards meaning that users didn't need to wait around. This was especially unique to RL.Supply, as no other site was able to offer Rocket League items as rewards due to the difficulty in automating delivery.

Engagement

RL.Supply encouraged and rewarded users that regularly engaged with the site by providing bonus coins. Many activities both on and off the platform could earn these rewards, promoting a more active and growing user-base.

  • Referrals: users could refer others to join RL.Supply by using a referral link that would grant a free-reward on sign up. The initial reward would establish trust and prove that the rewards are indeed real and promptly paid out. Those bringing in new users would also earn alongside the users they referred. An extra percentage of what the new user earned would be paid out to the referrer, with this value scaling up as more users signed up.
  • Quests: quests were introduced to encourage users to try different types of offers than they were currently completing. Quests helped provide more information to our recommendation algorithms and unearthed new lucrative offers that could be then shown to other users. Users that completed quests were given measurable tasks with a coin reward upon completion in addition to any coins they earned in the process.
  • Leaderboards: daily, weekly and all-time leaderboards featuring GPT earnings were published on the site, allowing all users to see how much they could earn. Those at the top of these rankings would receive a special flair and recognition in the live chat for their accomplishments.
  • Ranking System: users could also upgrade their profile on RL.Supply by leveling up in our ranking system. Long-time members would gradually earn XP through all kinds of interactions with the site, giving them priority access to support and colourful names and messages in the live chat.

Quests refreshed daily and weekly, sometimes providing multipliers or bonuses that lasted for the remaining time.

The above systems were a constant evolution and were rolled out gradually as members of the team developed these incentives.

Conclusion

Unfortunately, RL.Supply was shut down after 4+ years of operation when Psyonix, the creators of Rocket League removed trading from the game. This move was largely prompted by the Epic Games buyout of the development studio, in which the new ownership sought to transition the game's monetisation to the Fortnite model. At this point, the team at RL.Supply had well and truly outgrown RL.Supply as a business, developing skills, learnings and industry connections were brought over to BloxBoom where we continue to work in the similar, albeit uniquely challenging Roblox virtual economies.
